Safety is our number one concern when using a BB gun rifle and other quality air guns and we will provide some necessary tips and suggestions for enjoying these pneumatic devices.

Air rifles are much older than anyone would think. They have actually been in use for over five hundred years, though todays pellet rifles are used for target practice and fun, rather than defense. The earliest air guns were most often used for hunting small game, though some were used in warfare with mild success. They were called wind rifles back then and encountered a number of problems mostly due to inadequate manufacturing processes and the large amount of pumps needed to power them.

The Girandoni air rifle was used by the Austrian army, but required 1500 hand pumps to reach the pressure necessary for firing. This rifle was used by Lewis and Clark during their famous expedition, though it was most often used as a demonstration for local Native Americans. It was also the first multiple shot repeating rifle which paved the way for other successful models in the future. There was no muzzle flash and associate sound which gave this rifle a number of advantages compared with flint lock rifles of the day. The problems with gun were burst reservoirs which were impossible to repair and their high difficulty of use. At the time they came out the most complex machine most people had used was a horse drawn carriage.

High quality air guns have been around for well over a hundred years with target shooting clubs becoming common in many areas. Air powered pellet guns became popular for use as a sport rather than as a weapon, though poachers typically used air rifles because the sound of a loud report from a firearm would give away their position and let people know they were there. Today's air pistols and BB guns are generally geared towards target practice and small game hunting, though they are more often considered as toys.

A BB gun rifle is not a suitable toy for children and proper rules and safety regulations should be adhered to. It is not safe to point or fire these at anyone, these guns are still very dangerous, even fatal and can propel a pellet at over 1100ft/sec which is comparable to a .22 caliber rifle. With proper supervision they can be safe for backyard use, and some quality air guns are even safe for indoor use when a proper backstop is used. Most BB guns are used for target practice and training before using larger firearms and other rifles.
